By Jeri Baily

Spring greeting to all.

So far 2020 certainly has been a challenging year and quite different than what we expected.

Sometimes when we undergo major changes in our schedules and lifestyles, it gives us a chance and reason to seriously assess our current home and living situation, whether we are now in an apartment, condo, duplex, multifamily or single-family home. It is felt that this reassessment occurs particularly with people who had already considered downsizing on some level, whether from a large home to a smaller one or maybe to a condo to reduce cost and maintenance demands.

Any of these moves can be very overwhelming, but the REALLY good news is there’s help to make this a smoother, simpler process.

It is essential to work with a Realtor who knows the area and understands the challenges faced when moving. This is especially difficult if one has been in the home for many years.

It is important the agent is well versed in services available for residents, both in the current town and other towns within a reasonable radius. A buyer or seller should also look for an agent who has dedicated time to studying the unique needs of this population and earned the Senior Real Estate Specialist (SRES) designation.

There are numerous strategies to make this process of leaving the home of potentially many years easier.

– In the decluttering process, start slow and small.

– Safeguard valuables – maybe leave them with a relative or trusted friend.

– Remove items that have been put in the “discard or donate pile” immediately.

– Negotiate and compromise on certain challenging items.

– Reorganize rooms – a talented agent may help a great deal or a professional stager may be a good choice.

– Rather than keeping all the memorable items, such as trophies, one approach is to take a picture of the prized item(s). They are available for viewing, but not taking space.

– Ask for help. There are friends or professionals who are not emotional about the process.

Every move involves a variety of decisions and choices. One possible option for the next step is an adult community. This alternative adds some unique details that require consideration, such as location, restrictions, finances and homeowners’ association details.

Another possible choice would be a smaller, probably one-level home in a mixed neighborhood.  Some people prefer to live among a range of ages. A further choice is an ancillary building or apartment likely connected to the home of a relative. An additional option is to remain in your home. This may require some modifications to accommodate the changing needs.

These are all desirable options, and there is no right or wrong choice. It all depends on each client’s wants and needs. It is my job to assist you in working through all the variables.

The agent who has earned the Senior Real Estate Specialist designation knows that the choice to sell can be difficult. It may be emotional. Your SRES agent understands the challenges and demands of a sale and works to minimize them to provide timely support throughout. As needed, the SRES agent will provide information on tax accountancy, attorneys and financial specialists, as well as a full range of contractors.

I am ready to answer any questions you may have and begin the process of leading you to your NEW home. I can be reached at 508-259-9848.
