Northborough – Northborough Helping Hands Association, Inc. (NHHA) recently assisted 120 Northborough students in grades K-12 to start the school year with new backpacks and grade-appropriate school supplies as part of its 13th annual Backpack Drive.

The drive is funded by community donations each year, and it is a collaborative effort involving NHHA, schools and town agencies to identify families in need.

Backpack Drive coordinators Nicole Green, Cheryl Cerny and Liz Nolan appreciate the continued support of the community, which makes the program possible.

There was a 48-percent increase in requests over last year.

“I think, in part, this increase can be attributed to COVID-19 and the financial impacts it has had on families,” said Green.

NHHA is a volunteer-run nonprofit organization that works in conjunction with town agencies and the public school district to help Northborough families in need. In addition to the Backpack Drive, NHHA has a medical equipment loan program, holiday outreach program and emergency funds. Additional information can be found at www.northboroughhelpinghands.org
