Westborough to vote on $2.3 million purchase of land on Eli Whitney StreetWestborough – Voters will be asked at a Special Town Meeting to approve authorization for the Board of Selectmen to purchase for $2.3 million approximately 66 acres located at 31-33 Eli Whitney St. The STM will be held Tuesday, Sept. 29, at 7 p.m. at the Westborough High School, 90 West Main St.  

According to the warrant, 61 of the acres will be devoted to conservation and passive recreation purposes permanently. The remaining five acres will be acquired for general municipal use including trail head access and a parking lot. The article authorizes the town to appropriate the $2.3 million for the purchase from existing reserves, including sale of real estate, open space, and Walkup Robinson. The motion requires a 2/3 majority vote.   

Voters will also be asked to approve $58,983 for Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCUBA) for the Fire Department. According to the warrant, the SCUBA units currently in use were purchased in 1998 and showing significant wear and tear and several are out of NFPA compliance. The department received a grant in August for $260,000 to purchase new equipment; the $58,983 will be used to fund the balance 

A third article will ask voters to authorize the Board of Selectmen to award a contract to operate the town’s drinking water facilities. The existing contract has been in place for 20 years and will be expiring on June 30, 2021.
