Northborough – The Algonquin Regional High School field hockey team opened up the fall high school sports season with a 7-0 win over Leominster on the first day of competition for our area teams.

Despite the late start to the season, the limited number of games, playing with masks, and a number of modified rules due to the COVID-19 pandemic, everybody was thrilled to be out on the field competing once again. Field hockey games are now being played with just seven players on a side, down from the traditional eleven, and certain aspects of the game, such as penalty corners, have been eliminated.

Libby Alford leaps over the stick of a Leominster attacker as she chased down the ball.

Senior Day Ruffo led the scoring with three goals for Algonquin. Senior Erin Desmond and junior Shannon Hill were perfect in goal, sharing the shutout.
