Ballot question 1 passes while question 2 does not
Region – As voters across the country took to the polls this past election season, voters throughout the region followed suit as others did for both the presidential election and two Massachusetts ballot questions.
Democratic nominee, former Vice President Joseph Biden, defeated Republican President Donald Trump in each of the seven communities that the Community Advocate covers. As of press time, Biden and his running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris, were still awaiting Trump to concede. The President was mounting a flurry of legal challenges in several states as he questioned the validity of ballots submitted.
Question 1 asked voters to support an initiative to expand the state’s “Right to Repair” law by giving car owners and independent auto shops greater access to data related to vehicle maintenance and repair. That ballot question passed while Question 2, regarding ranked choice voting, did not.
In Shrewsbury voters also were asked to weigh in on two initiatives.
Question 3 asked voters to approve a bond authorization in the amount of a $42 million debt exclusion for a new police station and to repair and replace the town’s public safety radio system. That question passed, 12,019 to 7,857.
Question 4 asked voters to decide if the town should adopt the Community Preservation Act, which would enable the town to establish, via a surcharge on the real estate tax bill, a dedicated funding source for preserving open space, historic preservation and create low and moderate income housing for individuals and families, including low or moderate income senior housing. That question also passed, 12,495 to 7,391.
