To the Editor,
As we near Tuesday March 2nd, and Westborough’s Annual Town Election, I’d like to introduce myself to the Westborough community; I’m Fiona McDonald and I’m running for a 2-year term as Trustee of the Westborough Public Library.
A board of trustees’ position is ideally suited for me. I have such fond memories of time spent in the public library as a child, finding books and then completely losing myself in them! But libraries have evolved and are no longer just places to borrow books; the Room of Things offers a myriad of objects to borrow, and the library provides other services such as notary and exam proctoring, discounted museum passes, events and activities for kids and teens, online resources and information, and is a hub for community organizations. All of these are so important for our community, and something I’m passionate about supporting.
I’ve lived in the United States for 16 years, and nearly 2 years ago I became a naturalized citizen, which is why I can now give back to the community in this way.
I’ve worked in scholarly publishing for 18 years and, like the library, I’m committed to promoting learning, personal and professional enrichment, and a love of reading. My professional experience provides me with a strong understanding of finances and budgeting, of strategic planning to ensure my publications are well placed to adapt and flourish, of drafting policies, and of ensuring that people have access to the information they need. These are skills that I know will be helpful to the library as it works on its strategic plan and embarks on a renovation project that will ensure it is prepared for the future.
My children attend Westborough Public Schools and I am an active volunteer for the school parent group, helping with fundraising and organizing events.
I will help to ensure the library remains a free, welcoming space, providing access to information for all, and will help to prepare the library for the future. I will be honored to receive your vote and serve Westborough in this position.
