NORTHBOROUGH – A busy election season came to a close May 11 in Northborough when voters headed to the polls to settle contested races for Planning Board, Regional School Committee and Board of Selectmen.

Kerri Martinek and Anthony Ziton won reelection to the Planning Board. Kathleen Howland and Karen Ares won their races for School Committee. And Julianne Hirsh and Kristen Wixted carried the victory in the Board of Selectmen race.

The Planning Board race put incumbents Ziton and Martinek against former Planning Board Member Theresa Capobianco and land surveyor Glenn Odone.

The Regional School Committee race had incumbents Howland and Ares running for re-election as recent Algonquin graduate and Northborough Diversity and Inclusion Committee Vice Chair Mariam Ibrahimi sought to make her entry into elected office.

The Board of Selectmen campaign, likewise, had incumbent Hirsh running against Wixted, Vikram Verma and Tom Dalton for a pair of open seats.

In a late development, incumbent Tim Kaelin also jumped into the mix with a write-in campaign for Selectmen.

That push briefly delayed election results on the night of May 11 as Town Clerk Andy Dowd noted all ballots with write-in votes had to be counted by hand.
