REGION – The spring season is starting to wrap up with the MIAA playoffs on the horizon. As teams approach that time of year, they’re celebrating the relaxation of previous pandemic restrictions.
“The spring season has been the closest to normal as we’ve seen all year,” Algonquin Athletic Director Mike Mocerino said in a recent interview with the Community Advocate.
He added, “We were able to provide our athletes with more competitions… provide a Central Massachusetts Tournament, and the MIAA is hosting their seasonal tournament.”
Mocerino credited the student-athletes and coaches for the success of this season.
“Our student-athletes and coaches have done a tremendous job following the guidelines and protocols that have been in place all year,” he said.
Mocerino’s Algonquin teams had a strong start to the week, last week, with boys and girls track solidly defeating AMSA. The varsity lacrosse teams similarly routed Groton Dunstable teams just as softball, as well as boys and girls tennis posted their own victories all on June 1 alone.
Elsewhere in town girls golf athletes participated in their district championship tournament at Northborough’s Juniper Hill Golf Course.
“Thanks to all those that made this possible,” Westborough High School Athletic Director Johanna DiCarlo tweeted after the event.
A number of her school’s student athletes participated.
In Grafton, highlights of the week included a 14-2 win by the softball team over Northbridge. That victory locked down a perfect 11-0 record for the team through regular season play this spring.
