MARLBOROUGH/HUDSON – Marlborough and Hudson high school sports teams are preparing for the spring playoffs.
The regular season wrapped up last week and seedings had already been released for the upcoming MIAA tournaments as of press time.
In the meantime, though, local players, coaches and fans are also celebrating continued movement towards a sense of post-pandemic normalcy.
“Not the outcomes we had hoped for on Memorial Day, but [we’re] thankful to see our student-athletes on the fields (without masks) competing alongside their friends,” Marlborough High School Athletic Director Jeff Rudzinsky tweeted on May 31. “[It’s] been one heck of a year. [We’re] proud of all of our teams, athletes and coaches who have done everything asked of them.”
The Marlborough Panthers did struggle at the beginning of the week as Girls Lacrosse lost by a score of 12-6 to Leominster. The baseball team kept its game against Westborough close but ultimately also lost by a score of 11-8. Softball, meanwhile, lost to the Rangers by a score of 20-3.
Later in the week, in rivalry action between Hudson High School and Marlborough High School, the Hawks seized the day with an 11-1 victory at home.
“Great senior season Hawks and you’re not done yet!” Hudson Athletic Director Jessica Winders tweeted in a post recognizing Hudson’s five senior baseball players.
Winders also had kind words for the small contingent of senior players on the boys lacrosse team, which held its senior night on the same evening as the baseball team.
“This season simply couldn’t have happened without your example,” she wrote, thanking seniors Tommy Billings and Tyler Chaves.
Off the field in Hudson, one of the highlights of the week came on June 1 as the Hawks’ student cheering section “the Red Sea” reconvened for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began to support the girls lacrosse team on their senior night.
With previous pandemic restrictions lifted, students packed together in their familiar spot on the Morgan Bowl bleachers to watch a 19-13 victory over Fitchburg.
“This feels good,” Winders tweeted alongside a picture of the packed bleachers.
