MARLBOROUGH – Suraiya Shaikh is proud to have seen some of her patients grow up over decades in dentistry.
Indeed, in her 16th year at the helm of Assabet Dental in Downtown Marlborough, Shaikh recalls a handful of patients who would come into her office as four and five-year-olds. Now, those same individuals are in their early 20s.
“I kind of grew with the practice; I’ve grown up with the patients,” she said in a recent interview. “…It’s been a long ride.”
Having thrived in parts of three decades in town, Shaikh said she’s proud of what she describes as a clinic atmosphere akin to a “Mom & Pop store.”
Patients get treated with individuality and focus from a small and experienced staff.
“That’s the approach we have towards dentistry,” Shaikh said. “ I don’t want my patients to be a number and I don’t want a factory approach towards my patients.”
“You’ll see the same faces that are coming in and out of the office,” she continued. “You’ll see the same person at the front desk, the same dentist treating you, the same hygienist treating you and the same assistant. That gives us a very consistent approach towards the treatment of the patients.”
As she instills this philosophy in every aspect of her business, Shaikh brings experience working in other types of practices.
Shaikh started her career in India before then moving to the United States with her husband. She went back to school at Boston University and later took a job at a growing local dental practice.
Over the years, Shaikh saw that business grow from having around 40 patients to eventually treating 1,000.
“It was crazy,” she said.
Assabet Dental, meanwhile, isn’t like that.
“The whole approach towards treatment is extremely different as compared to any corporate office,” Shaikh said.
Proud of their relationships with patients, Shaikh and her staff are, likewise, proud of the positive feedback they receive.
“Dr. Shaikh is highly skilled but also has the perfect balance of compassion and sense of humor,” one patient wrote in a Google review. “She’s also saved teeth of mine I didn’t think could be saved.”
Another patient thanked the Assabet Dental team for squeezing in an emergency treatment of a broken tooth.
“As much as I hate going to the dentist, I can’t wait to go back to get some long overdue dental work done!” yet another patient wrote. “I highly recommend this dental practice!”
