NORTHBOROUGH – A man was killed in a fire in a residence at 129 Maple Street this morning.

Additionally, one Southborough firefighter was transported to the hospital for heat exhaustion.

The Worcester County District Attorney’s Office has identified the victim as Kevin P. Hunt, 40.

Northborough Fire Chief David Parenti said the department received a report of a building fire at about 4:20 a.m.

He said the firefighters were advised that there was “heavy fire” from the second floor.

Firefighters could only get so far into the room that was on fire because of how heavy the fire was, Parenti said.

“We made three attempts to search the room. Finally got the fire knocked down. We were able to get into that room and we did find a victim in that room,” Parenti said.

The residence is a multi-family unit that housed seven people.

The fire, which was under control when Parenti spoke with the Community Advocate just after 9 a.m., was a second alarm. A second alarm means Northborough receives additional coverage from neighboring fire departments.

Parenti said the Southborough firefighter was taken to the hospital out of precaution.

“He seems to be doing O.K.,” Parenti said.

The Massachusetts State Police and Worcester County District Attorney’s Office were also on scene.
