HUDSON – The Advanced Math & Science Academy girls volleyball team defeated Hudson High School in three straight sets Sept. 10, improving the Eagles’ record to 2-1 through the first week of their season.

Both teams were coming off losses to Groton-Dunstable earlier in the week, with Hudson losing 3-0 on Sept. 8 and AMSA falling 3-1 on the following night.

AMSA bounced back, though, thanks to strong performances by several seniors who have been a part of the team for years.

Head coach Joe Bengiovanni is relying on these upperclassmen to lead the team this season.

“I have a lot of seniors who this is their third year playing varsity volleyball,” Bengiovanni said. “My setter, Ruby Todd, she just really does a good job running our offense. Great hands, a real smart player, and really consistent.”

Todd led the Eagles in their victory against Hudson with 25 assists and four aces. Seniors Piper Kinney and Melissa Bibinski also had strong performances, with ten and seven kills each, respectively.

Sophomore Bella Rand is taking the court for her third season as AMSA’s starting libero. She recorded a team-high 15 digs in the matchup.

Much of the Eagles’ roster this season was a part of AMSA’s district champion team in 2019. Bengiovanni feels the veteran roster returning this season will position them well to continue their successes from recent seasons at the district and state levels.

“We would love to be able to repeat that, and the kids are working really hard to get there,” Bengiovanni said. “They have a lot of experience, and they know what they’re chasing after.”
