MARLBOROUGH – A Marlborough Girl Scout has received her Girl Scout Gold Award after she started a free program that provides math and science classes.

Sriya Vuppala is a senior at the Massachusetts Academy of Math and Science at WPI.

As part of the Girl Scout Gold Award, the scout dedicates a minimum of 80 hours to an extensive service project.

Vuppala’s program is called Virtual Guru. It offers interactive math and science online classes to students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

She started the program when schools were at a standstill due to COVID-19 with the aim of helping families acquaint themselves with online methods.

Vuppala created lesson plans, recruited her friends to help teach, and offered four group classes over the summer of 2020 with about 20 students in total.

Since classes ended, Virtual Guru has been expanding and recruiting tutors across the country.
