Assabet welcomed a brand-new St. Paul team to the ice with a decisive defeat at Navin Rink in Marlborough. St. Paul formed after the Roman Catholic Diocese of Worcester announced in late 2019 that it would merge St. Peter Marian and Holy Name, both in Worcester, due to declining enrollment.

Roughly two years to the date after that announcement, this was the first game of the first season for St. Paul’s varsity hockey program.

The team is coached by Jay Monfreda, who spent several years behind the bench for the Algonquin co-op girls hockey team before taking a job at the now shuttered St. Peter Marian.

HUDSON

BOYS’ BASKETBALL – DEC. 11

Hudson – 64, Grafton – 77

Grafton extended a 43-38 lead at halftime with a strong third quarter, featuring major performances by Ethan McInerny and Rohan Ramesh. McInerny posted 33 points against Hudson, complementing Ramesh’s 14-point day. But they ultimately fell short, losing their season opener on the road.

BOYS’ HOCKEY – DEC. 11

Algonquin – 5, Hudson – 1

Andrew Hodge scored a hat trick in Algonquin’s 5-1, season-opening defeat of Hudson on the road at the New England Sports Center. Algonquin scored first, carrying a 1-0 lead into the game’s first intermission. They then preserved their shutout until the game’s final seconds, only allowing a lone buzzer-beater goal by Riley O’Sullivan.
