HUDSON – Even with a winter storm heading their way, the organizers and vendors of Hudson’s Winter Farmers Market opened for the final day of their season on Dec. 18 in front of Town Hall.

Those vendors sold everything from fresh produce and handmade pies to soap, setting up shop alongside carolers, whose songs could be heard echoing throughout the market.

Expanding as an offshoot of Hudson’s summer farmers market, this winter market has proudly remained open rain or shine, said Sarah Cressy, who serves as the President and CEO of the Assabet Valley Chamber of Commerce while also managing the Farmers Market.

“It’s really important to offer this rain or shine because part of it is maintaining that consistent customer loyalty,” Cressy said on Dec. 18. “Even with some hail and very cool weather today, we still have a lot of people coming out.”

That consistency since Hudson’s main farmers market began five years ago has made it a staple in the community. Cressy said that many community members visit every time the spring, summer or winter markets are open to buy their produce and other essentials.

A consistent presence downtown, the markets also offer SNAP, HIP, and senior benefits. These help give more individuals in the community access to the market’s offerings, Cressey noted.

“Having the capacity for families to come down and buy their groceries via SNAP or HIP is really important,” Cressy said. “Because we have a lot of multifamily housing units surrounding downtown, it means that a lot of people without transportation still have access to locally grown and sourced foods. And that’s something that is really important, at least to me.”

Cressy further added that the markets have become even more popular during the pandemic as individuals look for in-person, outdoor activities that they can go to with their families.

Though the winter market is now closed for the season, Hudson’s spring market will open again in April, Cressy said.
