Westborough town iconWESTBOROUGH – Highway Division veteran Shawn McDowell was recently awarded December’s Employee Excellence Award from the town of Westborough.

McDowell, a 37-year employee of the Department of Public Works, is one of the department’s most versatile members, the statement announcing this award said.

“Shawn is relied upon daily to help resolve our most difficult problems,” the statement continued.

McDowell regularly forges through heavy vegetation to locate, inspect and clear storm water drains.

“Shawn takes this trust seriously and readily goes the extra mile when exceptions arise,” wrote the DPW.

Recently, while cleaning a catch basin, he investigated the sound of a large tree falling in the woods nearby. He discovered that the tree had fallen onto three high-voltage power lines.

National Grid gave its praise, noting Shawn saved hours of research to locate the disrupted power lines. As a result, the lines were fixed within an hour of the outage.

“Shawn gives 100% every day in service to the town,” wrote the DPW “His tenacity and humility are an example to fellow staff every day.”
