NORTHBOROUGH – Reinforcing a community built on kindness is the goal of Northborough’s first annual Kindness Week.

This initiative, hosted by the Northborough Community Affairs Committee, is an effort to work with students, nonprofit groups and community leaders to participate in acts of kindness for community members. It will run from Feb. 7 to Feb. 13.

“We’re working with them to get involved in any act of kindness that would make sense for them,” said committee member Rebecca Foley Mihopoulos in a recent interview with the Community Advocate. “We’re starting out pretty small, inviting people to do these acts of kindness.”

The committee has circulated a suggested list of ways to observe Kindness Week.

It will then be giving families luminary bags to decorate on Friday, Feb. 11. Those will be illuminated and placed in the shape of a heart on the Northborough Town Common, where the display will remain throughout the weekend.

The committee decided to host this inaugural Kindness Week during the same week as Valentine’s Day—a time it believed was perfect to spread kindness.

“Right now, more than ever, people need kindness.,” said Foley Mihopoulos. “We all could use extra kindness and happiness at this time of year.”

Even with the pandemic creating new challenges, the Community Affairs Committee had been able to run more events than it had in prior years, including the community-decorating contest held during the holidays.

“During the pandemic, we added more events that were more concerned with spacing and safety,” said Foley Mihopoulos. “We want to create a community in Northborough where we’re all treated with kindness and respect.”

Foley Mihopoulos said she hopes Kindness Week will now become an annual event for community members to continue to participate in.

“If people are feeling the kindness, I think it’s a success,” she said. “If we can put a smile on somebody’s face that needs it, then we’ve done a good job.”

Northborough is not the only area community to host Kindness Week programming.

In Westborough, the group Westborough Connects has organized several community events in recent years including multiple sets of Kindness Week events.
