WESTBOROUGH – A parade of rubber ducks will return to the Mill Pond Spillway in Westborough this spring as the Westborough Lions Club hosts its second annual Rubber Duck Derby.

Set for April 9, the event will fundraise for a scholarship for a Westborough student.

“The scholarship really is to credit a student that was very active in the community service arena, as well as someone who overcame adversity,” Lions Club Publicity and Communications Officer Susan Ash said in an interview with the Community Advocate last week.

The scholarship is open to high school-age students who live in Westborough.

The event was held virtually last year due to the pandemic. This year, the Lions Club hopes to host spectators, with a virtual option for those who cannot attend in-person.

“It gives people the option who can’t go to watch it,” Ash said of that virtual choice, which will involve a broadcast on Facebook Live and a rebroadcast on Westborough TV and YouTube.

Attendees can adopt standard yellow ducks, or opt for a specialty duck, which is a new offering from the Lions Club.

“We’re offering the ability to adopt a specialty duck, like a nurse or doctor duck, or basketball or football duck,” Ash said.

The event is held in early spring due to the difficulty in securing a running body of water in Westborough.

“There is little to no water if you do it in May or beyond,” Ash said.

Beyond the scholarship, which will total $1000, there funds raised from the duck derby will support prizes for first-, second- and third-place winners. Additional funds will be used to support the Lions Club and its partners.

Those interested in applying for the scholarship can find additional details online at e-clubhouse.org/sites/westborough/projects.php.
