Ruth BolandMarlborough – Ruth (Brennan) Boland, 96, of Marlborough, died Monday, February 14, 2022, at her home in Marlborough, MA.

She was the daughter of the late William and Anna (Bedard) Brennan and wife of the late Francis J. Boland. She was predeceased by her sister, Lorraine Comas and her brother, Robert Brennan.

A graduate of St. Michael’s Academy and Fitchburg State College, where she earned her Bachelor’s in Education, Ruth went on to teach in the Marlborough Public School system for 35 years. She also started the first public kindergarten in Marlborough in 1947.

Ruth was awarded a grant from the Cultural Arts Committee to introduce poetry writing in the elementary grades. Ruth was awarded the title of Poet Laureate. After retiring, she taught English as a second language to adults at Marlborough High School evening classes. She also enjoyed writing songs and poetry for retiring teachers and other community members.

Ruth enjoyed her time volunteering at the food pantry and was also a member of the Eucharistic Ministry at Immaculate Conception Church and was a member of the Citizen’s Scholarship Committee.

Ruth is survived by her son Gerard “Gerry” Boland of Marlborough and her sister Jean Brennan as well as several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, February 18, 2022, from 9:30-10:30 AM at the Slattery Funeral Home, Inc., 40 Pleasant St., Marlborough, MA 01752. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, February 18, 2022, at 11:00 AM at Immaculate Conception Church, 11 Prospect St., Marlborough, MA. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Wilson St., Marlborough, MA.
