REGION – A line of heavy snow marched across the region on Saturday afternoon, creating brief, near white-out conditions in some places.

The batch of winter weather brought heavy winds and cold air with it, dropping temperatures and prompting warnings from weather and highway officials of a “flash freeze.”

Experts had spent much of the day sharing photos, videos and other messages as squalls rapidly moved across New York and Western Massachusetts.

Conditions would deteriorate rapidly, they warned, creating particularly hazardous situations on highways.

“Use extreme caution if out on the roads!” the National Weather Service wrote in one message just before 5 p.m.

Meteorologists now say temperatures will fall through the evening and overnight hours before warming significantly next week.
