High school scoreboard: Overtime drama punctuates MIAA quarterfinals

REGION – Though a handful of teams saw their seasons end this past week, the Marlborough boys hockey team and the co-op girls hockey teams from Shrewsbury and Algonquin high schools remain active in their pursuit of a state championship.

The Panthers, Colonials and Titans each won their respective quarterfinals games this past week in overtime, teeing up a trio of semifinals clashes for Monday night.

The season now continues as teams look to maintain momentum.

ASSABET

BOYS’ HOCKEY – MARCH 8

Assabet – 5, Ashland – 3

Assabet opened with a flurry of first period goals against Ashland last week. The Clockers answered, but the Aztecs managed to regain their lead to seize a 5-3 win. 

This set up a quarterfinals clash with number-one-ranked Norwell on March 12.

BOYS’ HOCKEY – MARCH 12

Assabet – 1, Norwell – 7

Assabet kept things close in the first period. Norwell seized momentum from there, though, scoring five times in the second frame of their quarterfinals game on their way to a 7-1 win. 

This loss ended Assabet’s season.

ALGONQUIN

GIRLS’ HOCKEY – MARCH 9

Algonquin – 2, Westwood – 0

Mallory Farrell notched a pair of goals for the Titans as they upset seventh-ranked Westwood on the road in Canton.

GIRLS’ HOCKEY – MARCH 12 

Algonquin – 1, Winchester – 0

Mallory Farrell snapped a 0-0 tie with a goal on a blistering wrist-shot in overtime. Goalie Lana Pacific notched the shutout for the Titans, continuing a streak that has seen her move through the first three rounds of this year’s MIAA Division II tournament without allowing a goal. 

Algonquin will now take on Medfield in the state semifinals on Monday night at 5:30 p.m. at Loring Arena in Framingham.

GRAFTON

BOYS’ HOCKEY – MARCH 9

Grafton – 6, Burncoat – 1

BOYS’ HOCKEY – MARCH 12 

Grafton – 1, Watertown – 2

An unbeaten streak that stretched back to Feb. 2 came to an end in Watertown on Saturday as Grafton fell in the semifinals of their Division IV boys hockey bracket.

“Tough ending to a great season,” the team’s official Twitter account noted in a message after the loss. “The boys battled until the final buzzer.”

“Thank you to our seniors,” it continued. “They set the program up for what is sure to be a bright future…”

HUDSON

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL – MARCH 8

Hudson – 51, Bishop Fenwick – 69

MARLBOROUGH

BOYS’ HOCKEY – MARCH 7

Marlborough – 8, Essex Tech – 0

Marcus Chrisafideis scored four goals for the Panthers as they dispatched Essex Tech at home at Navin Skating Rink in town. 

The win set Marlborough up for a quarterfinals game against Danvers on Friday.

BOYS’ HOCKEY – MARCH 11

Marlborough – 4, Danvers – 3­

Mark Evangelous scored an overtime game winner to propel the Panthers past Danvers. 

Marlborough will now take on Lynnfield on Monday at 7:45 p.m. at the Tsongas Center in Lowell. 

SHREWSBURY

GIRLS’ HOCKEY – MARCH 7

Shrewsbury – 5, Stoneham – 1

GIRLS’ HOCKEY – MARCH 12 

Shrewsbury – 2, Notre Dame – 1

Shrewsbury skated past Notre Dame in overtime thanks to a game winning goal by Aislinn Bennett. 

The win vaulted the Colonials into the state semifinals, where they’ll meet Arlington on Monday night at Gallo Arena in Bourne.
