HUDSON – Hudson Public Works employee Stephen Proctor was recently recognized after he helped put out a fire in an overturned vehicle last month.

“I want to take the opportunity to thank him for his quick response and action in something [where] the outcome could have been a lot worse,” Director of Public Works Eric Ryder said during a Select Board meeting on Feb. 28.

Proctor was treating the roads in Hudson in the early hours of Feb. 14 when he came across an overturned vehicle on Broad Street. The vehicle was on fire and the driver was trapped inside.

“Mr. Proctor acted quickly, calling emergency services,” Ryder said.

Proctor got a fire extinguisher out of his town vehicle and put out the fire. In the meantime, witnesses helped the driver get out of the vehicle.

“Stephen far exceeded his job responsibilities, and we are proud to have him within our department,” Ryder wrote in a memo to Executive Assistant Thomas Gregory that was filed with the Select Board’s Feb. 28 agenda.

Select Board Chair Scott Duplisea thanked Proctor for his work on behalf of the board and the town as a whole.

“[This was] the right guy coming along at the right time,” said fellow Select Board member James Quinn following Ryder’s presentation.
