Marlborough Recreation opens registration for spring programsMARLBOROUGH – The Marlborough Recreation Department has opened up registration for its spring programs.

The rec department is offering youth sports, such as T-ball, baseball, flag football, dance and track. The department is also offering an esports league, martial arts and basketball.

Students in elementary school additionally have the opportunity to join an eScout Academy, which introduces participants to computing and STEM, game building and Lego robotics.

“It goes along with being able to provide something for everyone,” Marlborough Recreation Program Manager Joseph Mulvey told the Community Advocate last week. “Not everyone is involved in sports – they’re more involved in leisure activities they can do at home.”

Mulvey praised the eScout program for its success in other communities, adding that he hopes to mimic that success within Marlborough.

“They contacted me and they were very successful in Hopkinton and other communities so we decided to bring them on board,” he said of the program’s organizers.

Mulvey, having prior success in elementary education, understands the importance of STEM programs within the community. He noted that his students particularly enjoyed experimenting on projects.

“The kids would meet in the cafeteria and do different science experiments and they really enjoyed it,” he said.

Mulvey also praised Marlborough’s local eSports league, which has been successful since Marlborough originally partnered with the group GG Leagues.

“The sport is taking place with many surrounding towns and being able to compete with not only friends but also others in other communities, it’s something new and broadens what we can offer on our end,” he said.

Locally, Hudson has also run programs through GG Leagues.

For adults, the rec department is offering martial arts courses, as well as weekly yoga classes at Memorial Beach, a first for the department.

“We’ll hopefully draw a big crowd,” he said of that new offering.

Community members interested in signing up for programs should sign up online. Fees must be paid prior to the start of the program.

For those interested in other activities, Mulvey confirmed that the rec department will be hosting a “Movie in the Park” on a date at the end of spring, tentatively set for early June.

“Once everything is finalized, we’ll post it on our Facebook,” he said.

The department is also hiring lifeguards for the summer season, with wages starting at $15 per hour. Employment is seasonal through the City of Marlborough.
