WESTBOROUGH – Another truck struck the low train bridge over East Main Street in Westborough on Friday, firmly wedging itself under the span.
The incident, taking place in the lane traveling away from the Westborough rotary, quickly clogged traffic throughout downtown, sending a backup past the rotary itself.
Police initially blocked traffic in the area before allowing travel in the opposite lane from the one where the truck had become stuck.
The Westborough Fire Department posted a message on social media around 2 p.m. advising motorists to seek alternate routes that avoid the bridge area.
The truck was finally wrestled loose from the bridge and hauled away shortly before 6 p.m.
This is the third crash at the bridge this month, coming in a particularly troublesome stretch for a structure that has frequently seen these kinds of incidents in recent years.
Incidents have piled up despite some efforts by the town, including the placement of signs and a high-tech laser warning system used to alert drivers of overheight vehicles before they crash.
The Westborough Police Department shared a Facebook livestream from the scene as towing crews worked on Friday afternoon, with an officer explaining that the truck had been carrying a load of recyclables when it crashed.
“If you’re stuck on East Main Street right now, I apologize,” that officer said.
The police posted a second message alongside a video of the truck being hauled through the rotary on Friday evening, thanking community members for their patience in this “long duration event.”
