Hudson Schools’ Chromebook malfunctions continue as district receives new unitsHUDSON – The Hudson Public Schools are getting 50 new touch screen Chromebook computers as a gift from Dell.

The School Committee voted unanimously last week to approve this gift, which is worth $15,000 in total.

Problems are continuing, though, as the district grapples with persistent issues with a number of student Chromebooks this year, according to Superintendent Marco Rodrigues.

“This is an effort of Dell to provide additional support for the district in addition to what they have already been doing,” Rodrigues said of the Chromebook gift during the School Committee’s meeting on April 5.

Rodrigues said that many of the district’s Chromebooks have had a problem where the screen appears to be cracking. The error goes on to dominate the computer screen.

“It has been a great deal of an issue for us because some of the replacements have had issues as well,” Rodrigues said.

Rodrigues previously said back in October that more than 20 percent of 850 Chromebooks received over the summer had shown this error.

That number was expected to rise.

The issue was not localized to Hudson, as it had appeared on Chromebooks across the United States, as of that presentation.

Speaking more recently, Rodrigues said that this donation will provide some relief to the district in the face of continued malfunctions.

He reiterated, though, that the extent of the problem is much greater than the 50 Chromebooks donated.

He said technicians had been coming to Hudson to replace screens, explaining that the situation has been an “ordeal” for the district.
