REGION – The Boston Marathon got underway this morning, with more than 60 registrants from Hudson, Marlborough, Southborough, Westborough, Northborough, Shrewsbury and Grafton set to cross the starting line in Hopkinton.
The race is back on its regularly scheduled date on Patriots’ Day after two years of COVID-19 disruption. As such, participants enjoyed a clear, albeit brisk start to the day, with morning temperatures hanging below 40 degrees as of around 7:30 a.m.
This comes just a matter of months after 2021’s delayed marathon, which took place in October.Â
For many, though, the 2022 marathon caps a much longer marathon drought, after the 2020 marathon ran virtually and after the 2021 marathon went forward with a limited field.Â
The pool of runners swelled back to its typical size this spring with participants making their preparations throughout the past week, and with race crews swarming Hopkinton and other communities along the race route over the weekend.
