Harold W. StuartShrewsbury – Harold William “Bill” Stuart, DMD, passed on Tuesday, May 3, 2022 in his home, Southgate at Shrewsbury, surrounded by the love of his family.

Bill was born in Stoneham, MA on September 8, 1930 to Harold William and Madeline (Swift) Stuart. He grew up in Melrose, MA and attended its local schools until his senior year in high school when his family moved to Brunswick, ME. He was a member of the baseball, football, basketball, hockey, track, and rifle teams in high school.

He completed his undergraduate studies at Bowdoin College in 1952 and graduated from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in 1955. He served in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps for two years, stationed at the South Boston Naval Annex. He practiced dentistry in Shrewsbury for more than four decades. He was a member of the Massachusetts Dental Association and the American Dental Association.

Bill was a kind and generous spirit always ready to lend a helping hand to his many friends and numerous organizations. He was an avid outdoorsman and hiker all his life and, in retirement, was able to further pursue his love of painting, woodcarving, and gardening.

He was a longtime member and active volunteer of First Congregational Church in Shrewsbury. He took particular pride in maintaining the historical quality of the meeting house. For many years, he was Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 114. He was awarded the Silver Beaver, the highest honor given to a Boy Scout volunteer at the council level. He completed Wood Badge, the Boy Scout leadership program, and later became an instructor.

After his retirement, he and his wife volunteered for many organizations, including Habitat for Humanity, in both the United States and abroad. He was a longtime Shrewsbury town meeting member and volunteered extensively in the Mohegan Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Treasure Valley Scout Reservation, the Worcester County Food Bank, Community Harvest Project, Wachusett Greenways, St. Anne’s medical clinic, and Shrewsbury Little League.

Besides his loving wife of 66 years, the former Jean Armknecht, he leaves his children: William (Christine) of Rockland; Kathryn Davis (Richard) of Northborough; Martha of Boston; and Jon (Kelly) of Newton. He leaves his grandchildren: Michael, Matthew (Paige), and Nicole Rakoski, Cameron Stuart, Brian and Michael (Emma) Davis, and Hadley and Piper Stuart. He also leaves his brother Richard Stuart (partner Barbara McNulty) of Thomaston, Maine. He was predeceased by his parents and brother Douglas Stuart.

Visitation will be at Chiampa Funeral Home, 5 Church Rd, Shrewsbury, MA from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 14. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at First Congregational Church, 19 Church Rd, Shrewsbury, MA. Burial will be private.
