REGION – High school students Justin Wang of Northborough, Aarushi Pant of Westborough have been named as National Merit Scholars.
In a press release this week, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation said the two were among 2,500 merit scholar designees chosen from a pool of more than 15,000 finalists in 2022.
The students were chosen by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors who make the decision based on information including student academic records, the difficulty of courses they are taking and their PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test scores. The committee also factors student participation in school and community activities, essays they write as merit finalists and recommendations from high school officials into final decisions.
Receiving this rare honor, students are also presented with $2,500 scholarships.
“Winners are the finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies,” the Scholarship Corporation press release said.
The scholarships can be used at any regionally accredited American college or university.
Wang’s probable career field on the list of scholarship winners was listed as biochemistry, while Pant’s is neuroscience.
