James J. CarelliShrewsbury – James J. Carelli, 89, a longtime Shrewsbury resident, dedicated husband, father, and grandfather passed away peacefully, Friday, May 13, 2022,  arriving into the arms of the Love of his life and wife  Joan M. Carelli who passed away in 2011.

Jim was born in Worcester, one of four children of Frank L and Annabel P. (Brady) Carelli. Raised in the Italian neighborhood of Worcester, “Shrewsbury St”, he graduated from Commerce High School, joined the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, serving proudly aboard the lite cruiser “USS Worcester.” He returned home, married Joan M. Burns, and began a 54-year marriage of family, faith and devotion raising their family in Shrewsbury where Jim has lived for 61 years.   Jim worked more than 32 years for the U.S. Post Office, first in the Federal Square building, and then in the Summer Street main facility before retiring.

Jim is survived by his three children, William E. Carelli of Shrewsbury, James M. Carelli and his wife Gwendolyn of Auburn and Cheryl Ann Carelli of Arlington, Texas;  two grandsons, Jonathan, and Justin;  Nieces, nephews, and extended family. In addition to his wife and parents, two brothers, Robert “Bobby” and Francis Carelli, and a sister, RuthAnn Bartholomew predeceased him.

Jim was a modest individual who never sought the limelight, lived for his wife and family. He found his greatest times during the holidays, special occasions, watching the Red Sox or reading. His family was his life.

A period of calling hours will be held, Thursday, May 19th from 10 am to  11 am in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St, followed by a prayer service at 11 am. Burial with U.S. Navy honors will follow in Mt View Cemetery.
