HUDSON – I was lucky to have a get-away vacation in Tucson, Az., and Gila, New Mexico with daughter, Julie and spouse, Camille.
At their adobe brick Tucson home, recently accentuated with soft lemon-yellow and grass-green trim, we enjoyed watching the Phoenix and Boston basketball teams making their way into the playoffs (we hope); enjoyed the pool at the Tucson Tennis & Racquet club.
At the Tucson Tohono Chul gardens, galleries and bistro, we had a charming South-western lunch, discovered all types of local trees, many blossoming, and admired the timeless art work of Native Americans. In New Mexico we stayed in a Gila valley farm, the vintage Double E ranch, complete with vintage accents and modern comforts. From the farm porch, we watched many varieties of birds, including humming birds, feeding and flitting, and on the same wrap-around porch, enjoyed a very close Scrabble game. We also sighted a family of javelinas and earth-toned deer. Enroute to Gila, we saw our first “hoodoo,” a spiral of red dust rising to a huge column; many spacious ranch properties with appropriate wood/metal entrances, but barely visible from the highway, and the trails of current copper and silver mines in the nearby hills. (Letters in the local paper claim the water used in mining becomes contaminated and could harm local wildlife.) In the town of Cliff, adjacent to Gila, we noted there were three churches in the tiny village.
A sign on the Catholic church said that Masses were said there by a traveling priest on the first and third Sundays of the month at 2 p.m. In Silver City, N.M., we toured antique shops, marveled at the wall murals, and enjoyed our first South Western-style BLT, including chilies.
Air travel was fine, most people were masked. We noted in LAX airport in Los Angeles, when an entire flight was canceled, and passengers were offered compensation to accommodate their layoff, they accepted with resignation instead of anger. It was a wonderful vacation, and I am so grateful to my hostesses.
Senior prom held
Mayte Gallardo Santillian reigned as Queen, and Marcus Bass as King at the Hudson High School Senior Prom on May 6.
Mayte’s Court included: Haley Chaves, Kate Champeau, Angel Bethea and Gillian Harris.
Young men were Brady Stuart, Antonio Cerrato, Lucas Soares and Simon Akum Toh. Bruce Hedison, junior class advisor, said the Junior Prom is May 20, noting that these are the first proms in two years, due to Covid.
‘Tackling weeds’
Gardening guru Andi Ross will tackle the problems of weeds in your gardens and lawns on Monday, May 23 at 7 p.m. at the Hudson Senior Center at 29 Church Street.
In her program, “It’s a Weedy World After All,” she explores strategies to identify weeds and properly remove and manage them.
Doors open at 6:40 p.m.

Members of the Hudson High School class of 1947 met at the home of Thelma (Gates) Federman to plan a reunion.
Golf shoes were on sale at Webster’s, at 1 Houghton St. for $3.95 a pair.
A son was born to Marine Cpl. William Hollick and Pauline Hollick.
Girl winners of first prizes for largest fish caught at the Trout Derby included: Mary Ann Almada, Cindy Conti and Janet Glebus.
At National Guard training in Fort Lewis, WA., were Privates Richard Adams, Kenneth DeLauro, Robert Smith and Kenneth Girouard.
April 22, 1967 was “Representative Wilfred Balthazar Day” in Hudson, honoring the State Rep. and former Selectman.
