WESTBOROUGH – A truck fire sent smoke and flames billowing into the air beside I-495 near the Westborough/Hopkinton border on Tuesday, drawing an emergency response to the area.

No one was injured, according to a State Police spokesperson.

Initial calls reportedly came in shortly before 4 p.m. after a GMC Sierra truck suffered what the State Police described as “some type of mechanical failure.”

The driver, a 53-year old man from Gray, Maine, was able to pull his truck off the road, coming to a stop near the tree line outside of the breakdown lane,  according to State Police.

The driver and two occupants, ages 18 and 20, were then able to get out of the truck without injuries.

The Westborough Fire Department shared information on this incident around 4:30 p.m., showing a photo of a vehicle fully engulfed while firefighters worked to beat back the blaze.

This took place on the northbound side of I-495 between the highway’s interchanges with Route 9 and I-90.

Emergency crews warned motorists to expect delays at 4:22 p.m.

The state Department of Transportation (MassDOT) echoed that message,  noting that two lanes of traffic had been closed in the area.

The scene cleared around 5:15, according to State Police.
