WESTBOROUGH – The Westborough Community Land Trust awarded two $1,000 scholarships to graduating Westborough High seniors for student essays they wrote for the trust’s annual Earth Day Essay Contest.

Harrison Smith, who will attend Boston College, and Chocoria Jiang, who will attend NYU, were awarded the scholarships.

Smith’s essay was about the influence an encounter with a swan had on his desire to connect others with nature.

Jiang’s essay was about Lake Chauncy and its impact on her interest in marine conservation issues and her use of art to draw attention to those issues.

The trust also recognized Sophie Scerbin and Lindsay Hall as honorable mentions for their essays. Scerbin wrote about her experiences with trails at Mill Pond and a program she created for children to experience nature. Hall wrote about finding peacefulness in nature and finding ways to protect the environment, like picking up trash.
