SHREWSBURY – The town has been granted an easement for a portion of a sidewalk on Old Mill Road after crews learned it was on private property.

Department of Public Works Director Jeffrey Howland told the Board of Selectmen during its July 26 meeting that there was a building permit filed for 136 Old Mill Rd. to the north of a dam.

While doing work for a storm water permit, crews conducted a survey and found a “good portion” of the Old Mill Road sidewalk was on the property itself.

“The sidewalk cannot be moved just because of the location of the road, the dam, etcetera,” Howland said.

In conversations with town counsel, Howland said the easiest path forward is for the owners to provide the town with a permanent easement so that the sidewalk could stay on the property.

The selectmen ultimately voted to accept the sidewalk easement.
