WESTBOROUGH – Tonight’s Select Board meeting will include interviews with the three companies who have filed responses to the town’s request for proposals (RFP) for the former Regal Cinemas.

Located at 231 Turnpike Road, the building has been vacant since the cinemas closed in 2017.

The Select Board will be interviewing respondents Ferris Development Group LLC in Southborough, LAX Media MA LLC in East Walpole and Pulte Homes of New England LLC in Westborough.

Pulte previously built an over 55 community on Lake Chauncy.

The board will meet in executive session at 5:45 p.m. to discuss “the purchase, exchange, lease or value of real estate at 231 Turnpike Road,” along with 0 Ruggles St. The public session will begin once executive session ends around 6:30 p.m.

Target for vandals and others

The town acquired the Regal Cinemas property earlier this year by foreclosure.

In March, Town Meeting voted to transfer the property to the Select Board for its disposal.

During Town Meeting in March, Westborough Police Department Jeffrey Lourie said the building has been vandalized to the point that police officers had to stop by every day.

The doors have been welded shut, Lourie said at the time.

“They still find a way in,” said Select Board Chair Ian Johnson.

In addition, Lourie noted an incident where police caught a sex offender with a “young child” behind the building.

In addition to the vandalism, Lourie said, “The mold and damage is unbelievable.”

“From a public safety standpoint, the sooner we get rid of that property, the better,” he added.

The Select Board meets in Memorial Hall on the third floor of Town Hall. Their meetings can be watched online at https://www.youtube.com/c/WestboroughTV.
