Matthew F. Hanley Jr.Marlborough – Matthew Francis Hanley, Jr., 76, of Marlboro, MA passed away peacefully, after a courageous battle with cancer, on Sunday, September 18, 2022, at the Beaumont Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center in Westborough, MA.

Matthew was born in Boston and raised in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts. He was the son of the late Matthew Francis Hanley, Sr., and Mary (Pittman) Hanley of Jamaica Plain.

He attended Our Lady of Lourdes in Jamaica Plain, St. Thomas Aquinas High School, and Northeastern University. He played the bugle, trumpet, and French horn for the Drum and Bugle Corp of Our Lady of Lourdes at the Music Hall, Carnegie Hall, and St. Patrick’s Day Parade in New York City. From 1966 to 1970, Matthew proudly served in the United States Coast Guard during the Vietnam War Era.

Throughout his life, Matthew had many careers and was successful in many professions.

He served as Associate Commissioner of Assessing under Boston Mayor Kevin White, among other responsibilities, between 1971 and 1981.

He later served as the Parish Office Manager at St. Patrick’s Parish in Natick, MA.  There, he was remembered for his calm presence, wisdom, humor, humility, and willingness to support others.

Matthew was CEO of a Home Health Care business.  He was also co-owner of a home building business and built homes in the Greater Boston area.  He later worked at New England Rubber.

His charitable deeds were immense and lifelong.  He was an ambassador of the American Heart Association from 1971 to 1976. He was also President of the St. Jude House from 1978 to 1987, where he devoted himself to the service of residents who were recovering from alcoholism.

In his volunteer work, Matt’s passion, was helping those in need and guiding young people. Nothing brought him more joy than when he saw the happiness of a child discover his or her God given potential.  He said, “Each child is a gift from God wrapped with a beautiful bow that only needs to be untied so the world can see the treasure that God has entrusted that child to be.”

Throughout his life, Matthew was devoted to his family, his parish community, and his Faith. He was a proud veteran.  He was known as a jack-of-all-trades and master of many. He loved history, boating, sailing, electronics, classical and symphonic music, as well as a good movie.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine Hanley of Sunrise, Florida, his two sons, Andrew Goldberg and his wife, Cara of Wakefield and Craig Thonis and his wife, Alex of Sudbury, and two grandchildren, Michael and Melina Goldberg.

He is also survived by his brothers and sisters: Mary V. Hanley of West Roxbury, Robert Hanley and his wife, Marylee of Westwood, Martin Hanley and his wife, Judith of Waltham, Maureen Carrington and her husband Ronald of Andover, Patricia Gelineau and her husband, Roy of Beverly, Michael Hanley and his wife, Jean of Scituate, John Hanley and his wife, Theresa of Pembroke, Stephen Hanley and his wife, Ana of Framingham, and Rosemary Hanley of Waltham.  He is predeceased by his brother Brian Hanley.

Matthew also had many nieces, nephews, and cousins, whom he loved deeply.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, September 22nd at the Short & Rowe Funeral Home, 95 West Main Street, Marlborough, MA. from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Matthew’s Funeral Mass on Friday, September 23rd at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, 11 Prospect Street, Marlborough, MA.

Burial with military honors, will be held on Monday, September 26th at 1:45 p.m. at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, MA.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Matt’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
