NORTHBOROUGH – There are some new friends hanging out at Assabet Park – some spooky, some heroic.

And then there’s Bob Ross.

On Oct. 8, the Recreation Department hosted the 14th annual Build-a-Scarecrow Day. The department provided the straw, twine and the scarecrow mounting; participants provided the imagination.

“It’s one of my favorite events,” said department Director Allie Lane.

The Bedet family – Jennifer, Tim and Wyatt – made the scarecrow of Ross who was an art instructor and creator of the TV show “The Joy of Painting.” Ross died in 1995, but his series may still be seen on television, and his reputation for being positive is still being felt.

“He’s always in a good mood,” said Jennifer Bedet. “He had positivity, and we need that so much in today’s world.”

Nearby, Mary Kemp and Mark Amari made a scarecrow of his favorite superhero, Spider-Man.

Once Bob Ross and Spider-Man and the rest of the scarecrows were ready, a crew from the Department of Public Works fastened the creations onto the fence.

The scarecrows will be at the park until Nov. 1 or 2.

Upcoming Recreation Department programs include the Trunk or Treat at the Senior Center on Oct. 25 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., and the Turkey Trot on Nov. 24.
