Sr. Rita Carrier, SSA, 89, a Sister of Saint Anne

Marlborough – Sr. Rita Carrier (89) (Sr. Marie Joseph of the Infant Jesus), a Sister of Saint Anne died December 24, 2022 in Alliance at Marie Esther Health Center in this city. Born in Central Falls, Rhode Island, she was the daughter of Ovila and Edna (Lagesse) Carrier.

After graduation from the former Notre Dame High School (Central Falls), she joined the Sisters of Saint Anne in Lachine, Quebec, Canada, and pronounced her vows on August 6, 1954. Her 68 years of religious life were marked by a commitment to education at the elementary and secondary levels in schools in Massachusetts: Holyoke, Marlborough, Newton and Worcester. She also served as a Math Professor at Anna Maria College, Paxton, MA and Worcester State College in Worcester, MA.  Sr. Rita earned a B.A in Mathematics from Anna Maria College, Paxton, MA and an M.A. in Mathematics from Boston College, Chestnut Hill, MA.  Beyond the  classroom, Sr. Rita served as a staff member of a group home for the mentally challenged and on the Advisory Board of Worcester State College.

In addition to her saddened religious family of the Sisters of Saint Anne, Sr. Rita leaves her half-brother, Joseph Gorra, and cousins, Janet Carrier and Dennis Tracey.

Viewing hours are on Friday, December 30 from 8:50 – 9:20 a.m. at 720 Boston Post Road East, Marlborough which will be followed by a funeral liturgy and burial in Evergreen Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made to the Sisters of Saint Anne Retirement Fund, 720 Boston Post Road East, Marlborough, MA 01752.
