MARLBOROUGH – Mayor Arthur Vigeant and the Marlborough Public Library Board of Trustees have announced that Sara Belisle has been named the new director of the Marlborough Public Library.

Belisle is succeeding Margaret Cardello, who is retiring from the position after over 12 years of service with the city.

Belisle is a Marlborough resident who comes to the library after serving in numerous leadership positions at Newton Free Library. She has extensive experience in library management, including creating innovative programming, overseeing collection development in a range of formats, building relationships through active community outreach and managing all aspects of patron services.

“I have loved getting to know everything about Marlborough. I care deeply about learning even more about the community and making sure the library offers the services and programs that people want,” Belisle said. “I’m so impressed by the terrific work the staff is doing in the library’s temporary location. It’s a great team, and I’m really looking forward to what we will be able to do when we move into our beautiful new building.”

Belisle is joining the library as the city moves closer to completion of a major library renovation and expansion project.

Cardello, who has shepherded the construction project from its initial discussions nine years ago, is stepping down now to ensure the new director will have the time to learn about the city’s needs and develop policies and procedures for the new facility she will be managing. The new library is expected to open in late spring of this year.

“The trustees are truly thankful for everything Margaret has done for the community. Her efforts have made the dream of a new library a reality, and we couldn’t be more grateful for her leadership,” said President of the library Board of Trustees Fred Haas. “We are very fortunate to have found a worthy successor in Sara. In addition to being a skilled library professional, Sara brings a high level of energy and enthusiasm that will help the new MPL be a bright light for the city of Marlborough and beyond.”

“The service and dedication that Margaret showed as library director has enriched our community. We are grateful for her contributions and her commitment,” noted Mayor Arthur Vigeant. “I am excited to welcome Sara Belisle to Marlborough and to the library team. Her knowledge and experience in library management, combined with her dedication to community engagement, makes Ms. Belisle the perfect candidate to lead our new and improved library.”
