Post-season roundup: Eirmann lifts Pioneers in OT thriller

REGION – With the post-season underway, some local teams competed in their first rounds on Feb. 27.

Saint John’s and the Westborough and Algonquin girls basketball teams will be moving onto the next round while the Algonquin boys basketball team saw their post-season come to an end.

Division 1 Boys Basketball

Saint John’s 62, Chelsmford 61, OT

George Eirmann hit a shot with one second left in overtime to lift No. 28 Saint John’s over No. 37 Chelmsford High (12-9), 62-61, in the preliminary round of the Division 1 State Tournament in Shrewsbury.

Eirmann’s heroics helped the Pioneers escape, after having squandered a 15-point halftime lead. Harrison Miles led Saint John’s with 17 points. Eirmann finished with 13, while Noah Basgaard added 11 points and 11 rebounds. 

Saint John’s (10-11) advances to the Round of 32, visiting No. 5 Needham High (18-2), Thursday at 6 p.m. 

Methuen 51, Algonquin 42

No. 46 Algonquin (10-11) saw its season come to an end with a 51-42 loss at No. 19 Methuen (15-6) in the Preliminary Round of the Division 1 State Tournament.

The Titans (10-11) stayed close through three quarters, before the Rangers pulled away down the stretch. Algonquin got 12 points from Jackson Gamache and 11 from Patrick Biamou.

Girls Division 1 Basketball

Algonquin 58, Lynn Classical 51

Sadie Candela had 16 points to lead No. 29 Algonquin past No. 36 Lynn Classical, 58-51 in the Preliminary Round of Division 1 State Tournament.

Brooke Adams added 13 points for the Titans (13-8), who advance to the Round of 32, where they will take on No. 4 Wachusett Regional (18-2), Thursday at 6 p.m. in Holden.

Girls Division 2 Basketball

Westborough 60, Agawam 45

No. 22 Westborough High raced out to a 35-16 halftime lead and cruised past Agawam, 60-45, in the Preliminary Round of the Division 2 State Tournament.

The Rangers (14-8) were led by 22 points from Annabelle Semeter and 15 from Rachel Carpenter. Westborough advances to the Round of 32, where they will meet Mid-Wach B Rival No. 11 Nashoba Regional (16-3), Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in Bolton.
