Richard S. SweeneyNorthborough – Richard S. Sweeney, 86, passed away at Marlborough Hospital on Sunday, February 26, 2023. Richard was born and raised in Worcester, a son to the late Frederic J. and Martha C. (Wilson) Sweeney.

He was a graduate of Worcester’s Classical H.S. prior to attending Worcester Junior College and WPI’s School of Industrial Management. Growing up, he enjoyed his years at the Ionic Street Boys Club, playing the piano and life guarding at Indian Lake. Richard worked throughout his career in manufacturing. Prior to retirement, he served as manager of engineering services at Coppus Turbine – Tuthill Corp.

Richard was a hard-working family man who successfully supported and loved his family. He was loved for his quiet peacefulness, his sense of humor and willingness to help family, friends, and neighbors. Richard also believed in community involvement and for many years supported community action projects in his town of Northborough through participation with the school board, selectman, and volunteering. As a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus and St Rose of Lima Parish in Northborough, he served the community and church that he valued.

Richard is survived his wife of 64 years, Hilda (Power) Sweeney; a son, Kevin R. Sweeney and his wife Colleen; a son-in-law, Philip Polkinghorn and his wife Julie; four grandchildren Eric Sweeney and his wife Christine, Catherine McKenzie and her husband Kurtis, Meghan Sweeney, Adam Polkinghorn, and five great-grandchildren. Richard was preceded in death by his daughter Karen A. Polkinghorn in 1998.

Calling hours will take place from 4-6 PM on Friday, March 3 at Hays Funeral Home, 56 Main Street, Northborough. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 AM on Saturday, March 4 in Saint Rose of Lima Parish, 244 W. Main Street, Northborough. Burial will follow in Howard Street Cemetery, Northborough.
