Westborough Candidate Statement – Library Trustees – Dorothy Mello (Incumbent)
Dorothy Mello

First, say a little bit about yourself.

I have spent much of my adult life in Westborough. I work here and participate in community activities. We have raised our children here, and maintained our residence here. I try to contribute to activities that make the town a good place for all.

Why are you running for Library Board of Trustees?

I am running for re-election to the post of Library Trustee to continue the ongoing work of preserving and enhancing our historic library and its programs. As a teacher, my passion for literature drew me to run for the post of trustee, but soon I realized that the library is so much more than a collection of books. There are museum passes, CDs and DVDs, magazines both paper and digital, a sewing machine, telescope, tools, yard games and so much more. The library makes the internet available to all for free. At the library, we are happiest when we see our materials leaving us with patrons, young, mature and in the middle.

What do you think would be the best way to keep the library as a viable resource for years to come?

We need to support the professional staff who plan programs and activities for library patrons and oversee the well-being of the collection. We need the expertise of the director and assistant director to plan the budget and secure funding to enhance our local financial resources and maintain the integrity of our historic structure. With the help of the tech staff, our digital technology is kept current and available to all patrons.

With the defeat of the Town Meeting warrant article to expand and renovate the library, the Library Building Committee and the Trustees have switched their focus to repair work. What do you consider to be the “most needed” repairs.

The Library Building Committee and Trustees agree on prioritizing repairs to meet codes and prevent the deterioration of the historic structure. Essential repairs include, but are not limited to: roof repair; window replacement; copper flashing; and masonry. Inside repairs look to code compliance in electrical, plumbing, the elevator, ADA compliance, HVAC and digital infrastructure. We certainly look to the expertise of the architect and engineers to guide us.
