Please Support the Much-Needed Algonquin Athletic Complex Upgrades

Letter to the Editor iconOn Wednesday, March 15, 2023, the Northborough-Southborough Regional School Committee voted unanimously (9-0, 1 absent) to appropriate $7,960,393 to renovate the athletic facilities at Algonquin Regional High School. On Saturday, March 25th Southborough approved its $2,998,680 share of that amount at their Town Meeting. The next step in this process is for Northborough to vote on whether to approve our $4,961,713 share at the Town Meeting this Monday evening.

The ”Gonkplex” project includes the most significant upgrades to ARHS since the school itself was renovated nearly 20 years ago and at that time it was just the tennis courts that were added. The actual fields date back to the 1970s and lighting installed in the early 1990s. The fields and courts are all showing their age and, in some cases, are unsafe. We as a town have definitely gotten our worth out of the previous investments, but now it’s time to make our facilities ADA-compliant as well as meet MIAA standards for our students and all community members.

This project is not only “fixing” what we have, but there are some exciting additions to the campus — three pickleball courts, an outdoor basketball court, and a multi-purpose amphitheater will surely be an added benefit to the community.

Please attend Town Meeting at 6pm on Monday, April 27, 2023, at Algonquin Regional High School and vote to support these much-needed upgrades. If approved, the new facility should be ready for the fall 2023 season!
