Shrewsbury’s Community Preservation Committee spends first dollarsSHREWSBURY – The Community Preservation Committee (CPC) presented its first project proposals during the second night of the 2023 Town Meeting on May 16. The committee received 13 proposals from community organizations but ultimately only recommended nine to Town Meeting.

The Town Meeting approved all the CPC’s proposed articles in one “bundle.”

Article 36 allocates $65,000 to install a heat pump HVAC system to preserve the historic 1830 Brick Schoolhouse in the center of town.

Article 37 allocates $2,000 to conduct a facility review of the District #5 Schoolhouse, first built in 1828, to preserve the use of the historic structure and evaluate its infrastructure.

The Town Meeting also approved Article 38, which will designate $85,500 for a site and structural assessment of the pergola at Prospect Park, which is nearly a century old and in relatively poor condition.

Community members also approved several more articles. The approval of Article 39 sets aside $5,500 to preserve historic gravestones at Mountain View Cemetery. Article 40 allocates $40,000 to restore the playground equipment at Arrowwood Park.

Article 41 provides $70,000 for a town-wide playground assessment. The article also covers design services for a new playground at Edgemere Park.

Article 42 funds a $375,000 reconstruction of the basketball courts at Dean Park, and Article 43 allows for the construction of more parking at 645 and 645R Grafton Street, or Camp Wunnegan.
