Alan will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband and father who was a most kind and gentle man. He was never more happy and content than when at home with his family, his dogs, a few good books at hand and an old movie to watch. He was strong, confident, he used his words carefully, had a quick wit and an encyclopedic memory for facts and events, history in particular.
