Larry J. Grella IIIMoab/Salt Lake City, Utah – Larry Grella passed away on June 14, 2023. He suffered a massive cardiac arrest while mountain biking in Park City, Utah while enjoying a sport that he loved. Larry was living in Moab and Salt Lake City with his wife, Gail Biedermann.

He worked as a ski coach and custom boot fitter at many ski resorts, to many people in the ski industry he was known as “Larry the Legend”.  He was drawn to Moab in the early era of mountain biking and loved camping and biking the extreme trails. He worked at the top Moab bike shops and was a consummate bike mechanic, coach, tour guide, and promoter of the sport.  Moab was his happy place, and he set down roots, buying a house in the Spring of 2005 and operating a Bed and Breakfast.

He loved sharing his knowledge and aligning a person for maximum performance on skis and bikes. He loved staying in touch with friends, and somehow would connect with them unexpectedly.

Larry was born in Newton, Massachusetts, the first son of Phyllis and Lawrence Grella, Jr. The oldest of three brothers, Larry grew up in Marlborough water skiing, playing hockey, and snow skiing.

Besides his wife, Larry is survived by his dog, Burley, his mother, Phyllis and his two brothers, Steve and his ex-wife Rhonda Grella and Jeffrey and his wife Sue Grella, and his nieces Gina Joyce Maiden and Angela Grella and his nephew Jake Grella. He also leaves five great nieces and nephews, Landen, Leo and Josephine Uryasz and Margaux and Elizabeth Maiden.

A celebration of life will be held for his friends and family at St. Matthew Catholic Church,105 Southville Rd, Southborough, MA 01772 on August 5, 2023 at 11 a.m. and a memorial mountain bike ride and off-road motorcycle ride is planned in Moab, UT on September 9 and 10, 2023.
