Jane C. MayherMarlborough – Jane Cynthia “Cindy” Mayher, 74 of Marlborough, MA, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on June 20, 2023 at the Miriam Boyd Parlin Hospice Residence of Wayland, of which she was a creator.

Born on December 23, 1948 in Worcester, MA she was the beloved daughter of the late Barbara Stearns Norton and Bernie Albert Olmsted. She grew up in East Longmeadow, MA and in 1970 married her high school sweetheart, the Rev. Dr. Philip Joseph (Joe) Mayher, Jr.

She received her nursing degree from Hartwick College, and within a year turned to public health as her calling. She attended Boston University for her Masters in Maternal and Child Health and then Harvard University for a Certificate in Public Health Administration. During her career, she worked as a visiting nurse, a for-profit health care administrator and finally as the longtime Executive Director of Parmenter Health in Wayland, MA, and CEO of the Parmenter Foundation in Sudbury, MA. At the same time, she was always dedicated to her role as the wife of a clergyman, supporting church life in myriad ways in the Walpole, Wellesley, and Weston United Church of Christ congregations that her husband Joe pastored to during their life together.

During her tenure at Parmenter, Cindy was instrumental in the creation of an Adult Day Health Program, the Parlin Hospice, and the Camp Erin Boston for children experiencing the loss of a loved one. She also secured a $5.6 million dollar bequest to initiate the Parmenter Foundation, an organization she ran until her retirement in 2016.

Simultaneous to her impressive career, Cindy was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and friend. She loved plants and gardening, always putting up food in jars for the winter months from her garden each summer. She was an avid reader, an exquisite cook and baker, and loved to tackle the most impossible of jigsaw puzzles. But more than anything she was kind, giving and always thinking of ways she could be of service to others.

Cindy is survived by her husband Joe Mayher, her beloved children and their families – son Aaron Mayher of Denver, CO and his wife Linda; daughter Jessamyn Martin, her husband Andrew and their children Jasper and Abigail of Framingham, MA. Also grieving her loss is her sister Nola (Bob) Reis of Glenmont, NY and their children Lauren Gibson and Benton Reis, and her brother-in-law Rev. James (Marlaine) Mayher of South Lake, TX and their son Philip Joseph “PJ” (Kelsey) Mayher.

In her memory, donations can be made to the Parmenter Foundation to support MetroWest residents and their families facing end of life decisions and the grief that follows.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday August 5th at 10am in the Good Shepherd Chapel of New Horizons at Marlborough (400 Hemenway Street, Marlborough, MA) where Cindy was a resident with Joe beginning in March of this year. There will be a time of fellowship and light refreshment following the service. Her remains will be interred at Greenlawn Cemetery in East Longmeadow, MA at a private ceremony for family.
