SOUTHBOROUGH – Town officials have been notified that 18 asylum-seeking families – about 60 people in total – have been placed in a local hotel.

According to a letter from the Select Board on Tuesday, Aug. 8, officials and local legislators, along with local nonprofit agencies, were told by the commonwealth that the families, including children and infants, would be coming to town.

“The town is also in close communication in our region who also housing many asylum-seeking families,” according to the letter. “Various state agencies are working with the town to coordinate food delivery, medical assessment, MassHealth resources, translator services and other needs assessments.”

The town has established a Target Community Registry, https://target.com/gift-registry/gift/sboronewarrivalneeds. Potential donors are asked to not purchase Target gift cards at this time. The town will update the list as needed.

The town is not accepting used clothing, cash donations or household items.

Requested items on the Target registry may be dropped off at the Southborough Public Safety Complex, 32 Cordaville Road, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. through Saturday, Aug. 12.
