Woburn – Jane Moroney, 92, passed away on January 7, 2024, after a brief illness surrounded by her loving family. Born in Shrewsbury, MA on January 7, 1932, she was the third child and only daughter of Edward C. and Mary Irene (Sliney) Moroney.
Jane attended St. Joseph’s College in Hartford, CT where she received her B.S. in Early Childhood Education. After college Jane moved to Boston where she taught kindergarten at the Shady Hill School.
While living in Boston she met Jean-Luc Hunerwadel of Aarrau, Switzerland. They were married and settled in Hingham, MA where they raised their three daughters, Mary-Gayle, Suzanne, and Amy.
Jane worked as the Director of St. John’s Community Nursery School in Hingham. Later, she went back to school and received her M.A. in Pastoral Counseling from Emmanuel College in Boston and became the Director of Volunteers for Hospice Care Inc. of Arlington.
Upon retirement Jane and Jean-Luc moved to Orleans on Cape Cod. She had a love for nature, the beach and sailing with Jean-Luc. Recently Jane had moved to Woburn to be closer to her daughters who made sure she was well taken care of.
Jane loved to play board games with her family and friends and do crossword puzzles. Her favorite was scrabble at which she excelled and was very competitive. She had a great sense of humor and stopped to talk with everyone, making friends wherever she went. She was a nurturer, compassionate, and community minded. She worked tirelessly to ensure that her children had the best possible start in life.
Jane leaves her daughters, Mary-Gayle and her husband Robert Sweeney of Woburn, MA, Suzanne Hunerwadel of Ashland, MA and Amy Schimel of Brooklyn, NY. Jane also leaves her beloved grandchildren Jonathan Sweeney of Middletown, CT, Christopher Sweeney of Woburn, MA and Violet Schimel of Brooklyn, NY as well as several nieces and nephews and her close friends, Diane Desmond and Dan Desmond. Jane was predeceased by her two brothers Edward C. Moroney, Jr., and William Moroney. She was also predeceased by her former husband and best friend Jean-Luc.
She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. We love you, Mom!
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Jane’s family on Friday, January 12, 2024 from 9:30-10:30 AM at the Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main Street, Shrewsbury followed by a funeral Mass celebrating her life at 11:00 AM at Saint Mary’s Church, 640 Main Street, Shrewsbury. Burial will be in the family lot at Mountain View Cemetery, Shrewsbury.
