David Dickholtz, 89, of Marlborough

Marlborough – David Dickholtz passed away on Saturday, December 30, 2023, at CentraState Medical Center in Freehold. He was 89 years old.

Born in New York, NY, to Israel and Doris (nee Steinberg) Dickholtz, he resided there until the finish of college, the Army and marriage before moving to Forest Hills N.Y. and then Marlboro, NJ in 1972. He stayed in the home he bought in that town for the last 51 years.

Prior to retiring, David was a Sales Representative for the business his father created, Dick Coffee Company, in New York City. He then moved on to a nearly three-decade position at the Manhattan-based food distributor Captain Post, for which he worked directly with some of the finest chefs in the city. After that, he moved on to similar work for J.H.Haar and sons and US Foods.

He was passionate about history, frequently reading volumes on the subject, and from time to time, he toyed with the idea of becoming a history professor. Something else that he found equally stimulating was doing the New York Times Magazine’s crossword puzzle, a challenge he undertook every Sunday for many, many years.

He had a blustery, boisterous nature, an easy laugh, and an occasionally self-deprecating sense of humor. These, plus his interest in history, served him well when he appeared in a 1970s production of Arsenic & Old Lace as a mad uncle who believes he’s Teddy Roosevelt for the Marlboro Community Players, of which he was a founding member. It was a rare stage appearance as he much preferred to help behind the scenes.

David is predeceased by his parents, Israel and Doris, his brother, Gilbert, and his sister-in-law, Elaine.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Marilyn Dickholtz of Marlboro; his three sons, Daniel Dickholtz and his wife, Lisa, of Hillsborough, Howard Dickholtz of Marlboro, Andrew Dickholtz and his wife, Jeannine, of Lexington, MA, and his three grandchildren, Benjamin, Emily, and Fiona.

Services were entrusted to MOUNT SINAI MEMORIAL CHAPELS, East Brunswick, NJ.
