Marlborough – Leonidas Barrera Gonzalez, 65, of Marlborough died Monday while fishing in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. He was the husband of Blanca E. (Cambara) Barrera for the past 45 years.
He was born, raised and educated in Nueva Concepcion, Escuintla, Guatemala and was the son of Pedro Barrera and Dominga Gonzalez.
He leaves his wife Blanca E. Barrera; two sons, Leonardo A. Barrera and his wife Dominga and Jose L. Barrera; five daughters, Alcira V. Barrera, Monica R. Barrera and her husband Eliseo, Diana E. Barrera and her husband Fredy, Daisy D. Garcia and her husband Ronnie and Maria V. Barrera; two brothers, Luis A. Barrera Gonzalez and Oscar R. Barrera Gonzalez; three sisters, Gladys Mojarro and Elsa Barrera and Juventina Barrera; sixteen grandchildren and a great grandson; many nephews, nieces and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday July 30 at 10 AM in Immaculate Conception Church, Prospect Street, Marlborough. Burial will follow in St. Luke’s Cemetery, 24 Hopkinton Road, Westborough. Visitation will be held Monday July 29 from 5-9 PM in the Collins Funeral Home, 378 Lincoln Street, Marlborough.

It is with heavy hearts that we bid farewell to a truly extraordinary man whose presence brought light and love to all who knew him. A loving father, devoted husband, and cherished grandfather, loving son and brother. Loved deeply by his nieces and nephews. He lived his life with a selflessness and kindness that left an indelible mark on everyone he met.
Known for his heart of gold and unwavering generosity, he always put the needs of others before his own, offering a helping hand and a listening ear without hesitation. His infectious sense of humor and warm spirit made him a beloved figure in the lives of his family and friends, creating lasting memories of joy and laughter that will be cherished forever.
His passions for fishing, gardening, and spending time with his family were a reflection of his deep love for life and his unwavering commitment to those he held dear. His devotion to his “vieja” was beautiful to see. They did everything together. His devotion to his grandchildren was a source of boundless joy, and his presence brought comfort and strength to all who were fortunate enough to know him.
A sports enthusiast, he found great pleasure in playing soccer for many years and was a devoted fan of the Dodgers, his enthusiasm for the game uniting all who shared his love for sports. His favorite vacation spot, Punta Cana, where he couldn’t wait to go back.
His deep connection to his homeland of Guatemala was a testament to his roots and his love for his heritage, exemplified by his visits to the family farm where he was raised and his cherished time spent with his mother, whom he adored beyond measure.
A man of immeasurable love and kindness, he touched the lives of many and will be remembered as a true legend whose legacy of compassion and generosity will endure for generations to come. Though he may no longer be physically present among us, his spirit will continue to shine bright in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Rest in peace, dear legend, knowing that you are forever cherished and that your memory will live on in the many hearts you have touched with your love and kindness.
